Classic Gaming Expo Distinguished Guest:
RICK MAURER
Rick Maurer started his game design career programming at Fairchild,
programming 3 games for the Channel F system (Hangman, Pinball
Challenge, and Pro Football) before going to Atari to program
for the VCS.
His first game at Atari, a port of Taito’s Space Invaders, was
full of technical innovation, including having a then-record 112
variations. It quickly became the first “killer game app” for any
system (eventually generating over 6 million dollars in sales!), and
helped sell more VCS systems then probably any other game. His follow-up
title, Maze Craze, was equally impressive. It generated a random
maze every time it was played, and boasted a total of 256 variations -
the most ever for any VCS game!
Afterwards, he left the VCS division to work in the coin-op department,
helping design the popular Asteroids sequel, Space Duel. |
